Pearl Lam Galleries
For over 20 years, Pearl Lam has tirelessly promoted design as an art form in China and around the world. Pearl Lam Design invites international and local established and emerging designers to push the boundaries of traditional Chinese art and craft techniques, and create new works that reflect their experiences in China. The resulting pieces encourage a dialogue of cultural exchange, rich with provocative narratives.
The gallery aims to illustrate the absence of segregation between fine art and design in traditional Chinese culture, where decorative art assimilates into fine art, modernity merges with traditions, and traditional values are still revered. Pearl Lam Design seeks to cultivate the philosophy and aesthetics of Chinese craftsmanship while simultaneously exploring Western perspectives of these techniques.
Pearl Lam Design will be debuting new pieces by Reinier Bosch, Studio Swine, Bouke de Vries, and Danful Yang. Reinier Bosch’s cabinets, table and mirror are inspired by the Miao people, a minority group in southern China, as well as the city of Shanghai. Studio Swine’s Hair Haiway, a collection of objects made up of a composite material using human hair and a natural resin, explores the potential of hair, proposing a parallel between it and the ancient Silk Road, which facilitated cultural interaction between the East and West. Bouke de Vries gives damaged objects new narratives in his sculptures, using skills he developed and evolved as a ceramics conservator. The works often reference art/history, as well as current issues. Danful Yang casts light on the oftenoverlooked packing box by remaking it in luxurious embroidered silk.
The gallery also works with Maarten Baas, Mattia Bonetti, Patrice Butler, André Dubreuil, Studio Makkink & Bey, Peter Ting, Philip Michael Wolfson, and XYZ Design.
